Emerging Scholars Symposium: “Illustrating Love: From Myth to Manual:"

The 2019 Emerging Scholars Symposium is held in conjunction with the exhibition “Life, Love and Marriage Chests in Renaissance Italy,” on view at the Georgia Museum of Art March 9–May 26, 2019. Current graduate students and other emerging scholars will expand the scope of the exhibition by exploring the concept of love throughout the history of visual and material culture. This program is presented in collaboration with the Association of Graduate Art Students and sponsored by the Samuel H. Kress Foundation. The symposium is free and open to the public.

Pontormo: Portraiture in an
Age of Anxiety

Paintings curator Davide Gasparotto discusses the work of Jacopo da Pontormo (1494–1557), one of the most imaginative Florentine painters and draftsman of the Renaissance. Pontormo executed some of his most memorable portraits, among them the celebrated Halberdier in the Getty's collection, at the end of the 1520's when Florence was experiencing an era of turmoil. Gasparotto considers Pontormo's relation with his sitters and offers new insights into the artist's distinctive contribution to the history of portraiture.

Telling the Tale of Two Collections

Turry M. Flucker, art collections administrator at Tougaloo College, will share stories about the historic collections-driven relationship between Tougaloo College and the Museum, offering insight about some of the current works displayed in the exhibition A Tale of Two Collections on loan from Tougaloo College, and read a short excerpt from his forthcoming book, The Tougaloo Art Collections, scheduled for release spring, 2010.

This exhibition and its programming are components of the Art and Civil Rights Initiative, a partnership between the Museum and Tougaloo College supported by the Henry Luce Foundation.

This presentation by the Islamic Speakers Bureau of Arizona shows how the Muslim world has related to, influenced, and interacted with other cultures from its beginning and describes the many contributions made by Muslims during the medieval Golden Age of Islam.
